About Us

The Gap Project is part of the wider charitable work of Annie Macpherson Home of Industry which was founded in 1866 when Annie Macpherson together with Thomas Barnardo sought to alleviate the conditions of children involved in child labour through medical, social and spiritual care. The charity operates now as Bethnal Green Mission Church which works under the 1948 memorandum and articles of association which state that we aim to "promote the welfare and education of the poor and needy by all manner of means". We seek to provide holistic care and concern for marginalised and disadvantaged people in our surrounding community through addressing the physical, social, emotional and spiritual issues which effect them.

Our Aims

We particularly seek to work with disadvantaged and vulnerable children, young people and families. We offer services and events, small and larger group meetings, support for elderly people, a pre-school group, youth clubs and a registered children's club for 5-11 year olds. We also support projects and people who work in developing countries. All our activities and services are open to the whole community. The Gap Project is in partnership with The Good Shepherd Mission, another church and charity in Bethnal Green which has similar historical roots in the tradition of 'East End Missions'.

The Gap Project aims to be a welcoming environment where each individual is listened to, where there is every encouragement to succeed but permission to fail. The project will celebrate young peoples achievements. The Gap Project aims to give young people the opportunity to be positive leaders in the wider community and in moulding the service to their needs. The project seeks to equip young people with life skills and to promote positive lifestyles. The Gap Project aims to continue to develop in partnerships with other agencies and continually monitor and evaluate its work.
